Religion in America Today

Since religious practices were started, they have been the center of conflict and war. Most recently religion is taking a role in some of the biggest controversial topics in the United States today; homosexuality and abortion. Living in a country where the largest religious group is Evangelical Protestant's a group that does not support same sex marriage or abortion, the controversy is growing. As scientific advancements are made, more and more people are questioning faith, like they did during the Second Great Awakening in the first half of the 19th century. With such a vast questioning of faith religious sects are expanding, 303 religions and denominations today in the United States alone. With such a heated election approaching, the religious aspects and controversies are growing even more. These key issues that are intertwined with religion are becoming key issues of this presidential election. The republican party aligns its beliefs and policies with the Evangelical Protestant Church in not supporting same sex marriage or abortion. From a more open minded standpoint and side in giving the right to same sex marriage and abortion. The relation of political parties and religion are colliding with each other giving leaving true ideals and beliefs in question. This questioning is leading to what ti arguably the next great awakening.

    1. I appreciably your reading and replying to my blog post. On the topic of abortion I am strongly pro-choice. I think it is up to the woman. I also have yet to meet any woman who is pro-life, however I would be interested to see their views on it. I am very supportive of same sex marriage. I think that is a civil rights issue of equality. I see no reason why someone should not be able to legally marry the person they love.

  2. You make a great point! Sanctity of life and sanctity of marriage are huge topics right now in American because of the election. Recently in my religion class we spent much time discussing these topics and reading to further our understanding. The topics are going to have a huge impact on the upcoming election this year and I think will be the deciding factor for many people.

    1. Thank you for your response. I truly agree that these topics are going to have a huge impact on the upcoming election. For some these topics are more important in the decision of a president than anything else.

  3. I agree with you it is very controversial with same sex marriage and abortion. They are either for it or against it but getting to the solution is another story because everyone has their own beliefs. Going with this election there is a lot to think about because you are either for Mitt Romney (moor-man) or past president Obama. In my opinion I don't like either one of them because Romney is for women pretty much staying at home and working just in the house, sorry I don't go for that I'm an outside person. Obama I don't like because since he has been president a lot of things seem to be getting worse for the united states.

    1. Thanks for replying to this blog. I agree that both candidates have major flaws. For me I can't imagine taking a step backwards and eliminating same sex marriage and abortion. Although a bit extreme, at that point we might as well segregate school and completely eliminate women's rights. Personally I feel civil rights should come over the current course of our country, making Obama the better choice. However I don't like either one of them too much.

  4. You make a very good point! This is a very heated topic to many people and probably will be for a while. Even when decisions are made on them people are still going to have good and bad opinions. I have heard many debates about this and people who state their opinions have the backups to support it but it all comes down to your own opinion and what you believe in.

  5. I Brian Goedken, believe that religion can be very important but yet some of it is not. No matter what religion you are you believe what you want to believe with same sex marriage, abortion and ect. There are so many religion and they all are different in some way so people don’t really know what to believe is right. Some people are not very religious and others are and that can make a decision on people’s opinion. I think that same sex marriage is ok because if that’s the way people want to be let them be with the same sex. It is there life so they can do what they want because this is a free country long as it’s not destroying the country or government.

    1. Thanks for reading my blog. I strongly agree that same sex marriage is okay, however I disagree with your part of it destroying our country. I think its a bit unrealistic to think it is possible for the sexual orientation of a human to destroy our free country. Even if it were to I believe that the rights of people should come before the sanctity of our country. If America was faced in a situation between failure of government and and issue of same sex marriage, I would argue we need to completely reform our government. However I think your point is a very interesting one to think about.

  6. Hi!
I think you make a great point about the role of religion in our world today. It is, at the moment, the center of two of the most controversial issues in our country. Although I am not a religious person, I view religion is a very important part of life. People all over the country have very different beliefs, which in turn makes these topics even more difficult to come to a conclusion with. How do you think as a country we can overcome the controversies? For the most part, the country is very evenly split on their beliefs on these issues. How do you suggest we come to some agreement? Or do you think coming to an agreement is possible?
    Great post!
    Lauren
